The highest village in Scotland and nearby Drumlanrig Castle is in the north of the region. In the east the former mill town of Langholm is a good stop off point before visiting Eskdalemuir where the Samye Ling Budhist temple sits on top of the hill. Here you would be welcome for in the tea room for a nice break also before descending to the world known town of Lockerbie. On the border with England, marriage ceremonies are still regularly held at Gretna Green. Along the Solway coast the National Cycle Route visits several places of interest and others such as Sweetheart Abbey and Arbigland, the birthplace of John Paul Jones, the founder of the US Navy are also worth a visit. Further west, Bladnoch whisky distillery, the Mull of Galloway and Portpatrick fishing village, the shortest crossing point to N.
