OFF ROAD AND MOUNTAINBIKING

THE SEVEN STANES , GALLOWAY FOREST PARK AND OTHER OFF ROAD ROUTES

Dumfries and Galloway is becoming an increasingly popular area for mountain biking. Our area and in particular the 7 Stanes Project has been described as 'one of the hottest places to ride in the world' for mountain biking (IMBA Dec.2004).

This is largely due to the 7-Stanes Project with 5 of the locations in Dumfries and Galloway area being within a reasonable distance from our base in the market town of Castle Douglas. The acclaimed Dalbeattie forest mountain biking centre is 7 miles from Castle Douglas. Mabie Forest and Ae Forest is 19 miles and 28 miles away respectively to the east.  To the west, Kirroughtree is just outside our secondary base of Newton Stewart and 29 miles from Castle Douglas and lastly Glentrool is a further 10 miles into the hills from Newton Stewart.

The Galloway Forest Park also has much to offer the cyclist whether you are a mountain biking enthusiast or a family looking for a few hours peace and quiet exploring its features of natural and historical interest. Apart from the cycling trails at Kirroughtree and Glentrool, the numerous roads, both forestry and tarred, allow scope for cycling, including off road parts of the National Cycle Route No 7. As you explore the forest by bicycle you will see not just trees of different ages and species but a whole mosaic of habitats, farmland, burns, lochs, crags, open moorland and the old railway line and viaduct. The Park is the UK's largest forest park covering over 300 square miles.

OUR MOUNTAINBIKING KNOWLEDGE AND SERVICE

Bike Shops
- We are aware of and liaise as necessary with the various bike repair and sales shops in the region including those with on site facilities. Our service includes advice as required should you develop a bike problem. We do not hire mountainbikes ourselves but are well aquainted with the three cycle shops who do.

Accommodation - We have built up an extensive knowldge of suitable accommodation places for cyclists throughout the region. We are aware that mountainbikers needs can be different from road cyclists, in particular the importance of cycle washing facilities and secure storage for expensive mountainbikes.
Accommodation, subject to availability, can be low cost at hostels, at B&B houses, small hotels or quality hotels depending on the kind of tour desired.

Luggage Transfer - If required, we operate a luggage transfer service between accommodation places.

Transport -
Bringing your own car/van - We will meet you on arrival at your accommodation or first mountainbiking location to explain the content of your tour and provide maps and any other tour information, including things to do and places to go in the locality both for bikers and partners/families if required.

Transport required
We are able to arrange pickup from Dumfries or Lockerbie railway stations in our region or from Glasgow Prestwick airport (Ryanair) which is approx. one hour from our base. We can arrange car hire from Prestwick.
We are able to provide a tour with transport between Mabie/Dumfries, Dalbeattie/Kippford and Newton Stewart which are adjacent to the three main 7 Stanes centres at Mabie, Dalbeattie and Kirroughtree which allows flexibility for the mountainbiker.
At present it is more difficult for us to arrange transport between the various biking areas within our region, although it can be done with additional cost.

Tours - Mountainbiking breaks can be at one or more locations within our region. For those coming for a short break from England, the 7 Stanes centres at Mabie, Dalbeattie and Ae are reasonably close together and provide a variety of tracks. For those coming by ferry from Ireland or further north in Scotland, Kirroughtree and Glentrool also come into play.
At this stage we prefer to receive enquiries from potential customers in good time to allow us to research the best options for tours according to arrival mode, mountainbiking/off road level preferred, available accommodation and desired tour duration.
With experience of the most popular tours we will be able offer a menu of mountainbiking/off road breaks at standard costs.
